The Makers’ Ensemble’s Short Play Fest (SPF) is an annual festival of staged readings dedicated to new work development and the cultivation of playwright–director relationships. Each year, the resident ensemble invites four emerging directors—each with unique backgrounds, aesthetics, and approaches—to select a play from the festival’s open call submissions. Once selected, playwrights and directors are given full creative freedom to shape their developmental process, whether that results in a staged presentation or a reading at music stands. SPF culminates in an evening of daring new short plays, highlighting the collaborative spark at the earliest stage of creation.
